オジマンディアス(Ozymandias: ラムセス2世)はバイロンではな く、パーシー・ビッシュ・シェリーという人が書いた詩の有名な一節らしいです。その中の'My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!'はラムセス2世の像に記されているそうな。
オジマンディアスは生前、傲慢な王で様々なものを作り出しました。まさに神のように。しかし、結局のところ、最後にはすべて衰退してしまうのです。この一節は方丈記にあるように、無常観を語った詩なのだと解釈しています。神に対しても、同じ運命が待ち受けているぞというメッセージなのでしょう。
このセリフを言いながら、デヴィッドは創造主たちの都市に向かって、あの黒いツボを投下させ、都市を破壊し創造主たちを虐殺します。オジマンディアスが経験した栄枯盛衰を、創造主たちにも見せたかったのでしょうか。衰退した彼らの文明を無理やり終わらせる形で。
エイリアン:コヴェナントの元のタイトルが「Paradise Lost」だったことを考えると、このあたりにリドリー・スコットが描きたかったものがあるのかもしれません。クリエイティブの一側面として「ゆく川の流れは絶えずしてしかももとの水にあらず」、「破壊と新生」というのがキーワードなのかもしれません。
創造主たちの文明を破壊した後に、自分自身の新たな創造を始めるというのがデヴィッドの目的だったのだと思います。
